Background

SSNCO, a Chapter member of Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC&N) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the centre to implement the Horn of Africa Environmental Sustainability and Resilience (HoA-ESR) project with the purpose of achieving sustainable natural resource management and conservation of the rich biodiversity in the immense landscapes of Boma-Badingilo, and Loelle-Kidepo. The project beneficiaries are a range of grass-root communities, national and state government line ministries, academia, research institutions, civil society, private sector, international NGOs, national and regional chapter members, and donors funding the project. These stakeholders comprise the network of indigenous people, policy makers, regional partners and private actors striving for environmental sustainability for resilience towards the negative exploitation of the biodiversity ecosystem goods and services. This is the fourth year of implementation of the HoA-ESR project in South Sudan.

Objectives

Goal: Enhance environmental sustainability and resilience through research, knowledge-based policy and development as a pathway to promoting sustainable natural resources management, conservation of biodiversity and regional integration, peace and stability in the Horn countries

Specific objectives

The project objectives are centred around five intervention areas namely:

  • Landscape restoration, resilience and sustainable natural resources management,
  • Food security and community resilience,
  • Energy security, energy-efficient technology development and promotion,
  • Demand-driven action research (knowledge co-generation and use) for capacity building, evidence-based policy dialogue and decision making,
  • Public-Private Partnerships engagement for landscape restoration and resilience building.

Key achievements to outline include the following:

  • Fruit-tree seedlings of various species and/or varieties purchased for communities
  • Effective management of the protected areas, including through rehabilitation and restoration of degraded areas with physical and biological measures
  • Solar powered vegetables garden covering an area of 5,600 square metres or 1.384 acres
  • Value addition through Cargo tri-cycle (Tuk-tuk) for transporting crop/fish produce to markets for community groups
  • Purchase and distribution of assorted farming tools and bee-hives to communities
  • Solar charging kiosk fabrication and installation for youth groups to promote green energy
  • Promotion of fish storage through solar powered cold room storage facilities
  • Support to wildlife enforcement through distribution of camping equipment and furnishing offices
  • Demand driven action research by supporting students and staff to inform policy makers.
